Sola Caritas
Takes 1st Place
As the organizers of EcoVenture 2008, Dalhousie Univesrity would like to congratulate the winners of Canada's first ever green business plan competition!
Queens University's Sola Caritas took home first place honours and a cheque for $15,000. Sola Caritas, or SolaCaritas.com, is an online platform that serves three constituents: charities, companies, and communities. They provide tools to create a long-term funding solution for charities such as WWF. Sola Caritas beat out eleven other teams to claim this year's top prize and the right to declare themselves the first winners of this newly minted business plan competition.
Second place was taken by E4 Lighting Inc. from the University of Waterloo. As the runner up in this year's competition, E4 returns home with $8,000 in seed money to take their LED lighting innovation to market. Queens University also laid claim to the third place finish, with the team from Eco-Junk adding $4,000 to their collective bank accounts.
Honourable mention goes out to the balance of the finalists and semi-finalists who competed in Halifax on March 28th-29th. The competition judges were very impressed with the poise and professionalism displayed by all teams that competed in EcoVenture 2008. As one of the final round judges stated, the businesses were of very high quality and deserving of praise.
First place Winners Sola Caritas with Rose Wilson of
Wilson Fuel Ltd. (sponsor) and Dean David Wheeler
Dalhousie University, the Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship, and the Eco-Efficiency Centre would like to thank both Wilsons Fuel Ltd. and Ocean Nutrition Canada Ltd. for their generous provision of prize money. Without their support, this event would not have been possible.
Dalhousie would also like to extend its appreciation to the Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia for championing the project. Without their leadership and financial contributions, the combined conference and business plan competition could not have been launched.
